Journal Title: PARIPEX-Indian Journal of Research - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: Knowledge of variations in the position, shape, and the size of the mental foramen and the presence of the accessory mental foramen is important for dental surgeons. It is also essential to have effective and successful anaesthetic nerve blocks, prior to the surgical procedure. Materials and Methods: 100 human mandibles obtained from NSCB Medical College, Jabalpur were used for the study. Various parameters were measured. The location shape, and presence of accessory foramen were noted. Result: 10% of the mandibles showed double mental foramen. Most of mental foramina were round shape. The most common position was on the longitudinal axis of the second premolar. Mean distance (in mm) between (1) symphysis menti and MF was 25.41±3.30 & 26.15±2.19 (2) MF and posterior border of ramus was 64.79± 5.08 & 64.51± 5.53 (3) vertical distance between MF and base of mandible was13.68± 1.65 & 13.66±1.80 (4) alveolar crest and MF was 12.18± 3.33 & 111.48±3.66 on right & left side respectively.
