Motor abilities and the level of motor skills in gymnastics of the students of physical education

Abstract

The paper attempts to find the elements which are essential in the teaching process of motor actions in gymnastics. Finding these elements (fitness and coordination skills) may allow one to apply such solutions which would optimize the effectiveness of teaching motor actions and would make it possible to search for the best method of teaching and improving technical skills at all levels of motor training. Research work was performed with a group of 116 students (53 females and 63 males) of the Physical Training studies at the Department of Physical Education and Physiotherapy, Technological University in Opole. The studies of coordination abilities were based upon the tests suggested by Raczek et al. [5], whereas fitness and complex skills were measured by means of popular motor ability tests. The results of tests show that the key skills in gymnastics at the university level appear to be agility, flexibility, speed of response since these properties affect significantly the level of most operations taught during gymnastic lessons. Variability resources explained by the above mentioned skills are (for women): 38% (overturns and overthrows), 49% (head stand and handstand), 20% (gymnastic jumps), 23% (horizontal bar exercise). The male group shows a much higher variability of the motor skill structure which is the condition for the effectiveness of acquiring motor skills and this is why it is impossible to distinguish tests of motor skills which would fairly forecast mastering and improving the techniques of gymnastic skills.
