Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
BACKGROUND: In spite of knowledge and means for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, Tuberculosis (TB) continues to remain a major public health problem in developing countries. It is comparatively easy to diagnose pulmonary TB, while Extra Pulmonary TB (EPTB) lacks the easy and simple diagnostic method. Objective: To study the clinical profile of extra pulmonary tuberculosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with extra pulmonary tuberculosis as determined by clinical, radiological, and/or pathological means were included in this study. After taking thorough medical history, all patients underwent detailed physical examination. Routine laboratory examination and chest X-ray of the postero-anterior view. Ultrasonography, CT scan, MRI, Barium study, FNAC, biopsy and/or body fluid examination were carried out whenever necessary. Diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical examination, radiological, pathological analysis and response to the anti tuberculous treatment. RESULTS: EPTB was more common n females (54%) as compare to males (46%). In the present study lymph node tuberculosis was most common (30%) followed by pleural effusion (22%), abdominal tuberculosis (20%) and genitourinary tuberculosis (10%). In the present study majority of patients were in the age group of 21-40 years constituting 68% of the total patients. CONCLUSION: EPTB is more common in female, young age group and in lower socioeconomic class. Lymph node is the most common form of EPTB followed by pleural effusion and abdominal tuberculosis. Anorexia and weight loss are the most common constitutional symptoms in EPTB.
