Determination of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus abundance in organic manured fish ponds
Journal Title: Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 4
Abstract
An experiment was conducted for 6 weeks (between August and September 2010) with 4 treatments (T1: poultry manure, T2: cattle manure, T3: poultry and cattle manure and T4: control-no manure) assigned to 8 concrete ponds at random to determine chlorophyll a and total phosphorus abundance in organic manured fish ponds. Results of the study suggest that T1, T2, and T3 had an effect on chlorophyll a and total phosphorus abundance in organic manured ponds. The final mean average for chlorophyll a ranged from 0.0105mg/m3 to 0.045mg/m3 and that of total phosphorus ranged from 0.024mg/50mL to 0.522mg/50mL. Chlorophyll a and phosphorus were positively correlated with a coefficient of 0.92 and it was significant (p ≤ 0.05). However, weekly performance of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus was higher in T3 compared to other treatments. The treatments also showed differences in the number of plankton species available. Phytoplankton species in T3 increased from 888 in week three to 933 in week six. However, the zooplankton species reduced from 10 in week three to 4 in week six compared to other treatments. These results indicate that animal manure varied in influencing the production of chlorophyll a, planktons and phosphorus. The variation may be attributed to feed nutritive value of the animals to which they were fed. Farmers should therefore be encouraged to use a combination of poultry and cattle manure to obtain maximum benefits in increasing chlorophyll a and total phosphorus.

The effects of time of reproductive migration on the biochemical composition and mobility trait of sperm in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) brood stocks
In this study the effects of reproductive migration of Persian sturgeon on some mobility traits of sperm (duration of sperm movement and the percentage of motile sperms) and on biochemical compounds (e.g. calcium, magnes...
The effect of feeding frequency on growth performance of rainbow trout fingerlings reared in recirculating system.
Growth, feed consumption and conversion ratios of trout fingerlings (Oncorhynchus mykiss) subjected to daily feeding frequencies were evaluated. The trial performed using 295 fish with a mean weight of 5.53±0.25 g divide...
Presence of multinucleate giant cells in normal thymus of nutria (Myocastor coypus)
Collected thymus from three 12-months-old clinically healthy nutria were histologically processed. Multinucleate giant cells have been observed occurring as a response to the existence of an acidophil material in relativ...
Impact of mass coral bleaching on reef fish community and fishermen catches at Sabang, Aceh Province, Indonesia
Mass coral bleaching was observed at Sabang, Aceh in early 2010, and approximately 60% of hard coral in waters surrounding Sabang died post-event. Coral mortality was expected to affect the composition of reef fish due t...
