Effect of Planned Early Recommended Ambulation Technique on Selected Postcaesarean Biophysiological Health Parameters

Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Caesarean section has been a part ofhuman culture since ancient times. It has been usedeffectively throughout the 20th century and among themajor abdominal surgeries, it is the most common, oldestworldwide surgery performed in obstetrics. Despitethe life saving advantages, there are several adverseconsequences of caesarean delivery for a woman andto her household. The rate and risk of these complicationsincreases due to the increasing incidence mainlyin countries like India. The role of nurse midwife is toact in the best interest of patient and newborn and makethe patient independent in carrying out the activities ofdaily living as soon as possible. This can lead to a fasterrecovery and shorter hospital stay. Also it can indirectlyhelp in reducing the complications associated with prolongedbed rest and can improve the maternal newbornbonding. Aim and Objectives: The present studywas done to evaluate the effect of planned earlyambulation on selected biophysiological health parametersof post caesarean patients. Material and Methods:The study included total 500 study subjects, 250in experimental and 250 in control group. Quasi experimentalapproach with multiple time series designwas adopted for the study. The experimental group wasgiven an early planned recommended ambulation techniquestarting from the day of surgery. This consistedof deep breathing exercise, cough exercise, leg exerciseand early mobilization. Over and above, the routinegeneral health care was given by the doctors andnurses. The control group received only by routine generalcare by doctors and nurses and mobilization onthird post operative day as per strategy adopted by thehospital. The deep breathing exercises, coughing exercisesand leg exercises were not given routinely andhence were not given to the control group. Post caesareanbiophysiological parameters chart was used toassess the selected parameters for first five post operativedays. Result: The significant findings of thestudy were that there was a significant difference inthe proportions of normal observations of selectedbiophysiological health parameters like incisional pain, condition of breast, condition of abdomen and peristalticmovements of experimental group as compared tothat of control group. All these parameters improvedsignificant during first five post caesarean days at 0.05level of significance. Thus the alternative hypothesiswas accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Fromthe present study it could be concluded that the earlyplanned ambulation is an effective strategy for postoperative management of caesarean patient. It can helpin avoiding morbidity and can enhance the early recoveryof the patient.
