Effect of use ginger (Zingiber officinale) and thymus (Thymus vulgaris) extract on performance and some hematological parameters on broiler chicks

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the effect of use of ginger and thymus extract, on performance of broiler chicks. A total 144 one day broiler chicks with an average weight of 38 ± 3.4 g were divided into 3 treatments of birds (n=12) and each treatment was further divided into 4 replicates. Chicks were fed by basal diet as control group, basal diet with 0.5% ginger extract (T1), basal diet with thymus 0.5% extract (T2) .At the end of trial 3 birds' form each treatment were weighted and slaughtered. Some hematological parameters such as calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated. In addition antibody titer against new castle vaccine evaluation on 42 days was investigated. Data showed that use of T1, T2 increased FI significantly in comparison to control diets (p<0.05).Data from this study showed that a triglyceride level was lower when chicks used T1, T2 diets and a cholesterol level was at the lowest in T2 group. Calcium and Phosphorus levels were higher when chicks fed by T1,T2 diet (p<0.05). At 42 days antibody titer against new castle vaccine test showed that it was higher significantly on T1,T2 (p<0.05).Drumstick breast meat percentage was increase were broilers fed with T1,T2 than control group (p<0.05).Data that showed of gizzard percentage was higher in the T2 and it was at the lowest in control group (p<0.05).Also liver percentage was higher in control group and borsal.f percentage was higher in T2 (p<0.05).In conclusion it seem that inclusion of ginger and thymus extract in broiler chicks diet at can be useful and have significantly effects on growth performance and some blood biochemical parameters. FI, Feed intake; BW, Body weight; FCR, Feed conversion ratio. T1, basal diet with 0.5% added Ginger extract; T2, basal diet with 0.5% added thymus extract.
