Entertainment Activities in Bucharest during the German Occupation of 1916-1918. Theatres and Cinemas

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the German occupation in Bucharest and the vectors used by the German authorities to control the daily life of the civilians by the use of popular forms of entertainment. During wartime, recreational activities played a significant role in modelling the perception of the people, regarding the events that surrounded them, as well as being a mean to escape from the everyday hardships even for a few hours. If the Romanian state acknowledged the importance of theatres and cinemas when it was already too late, the Germans had the experience of two years of war. The occupants used these instruments in order to induce a feeling of internal security towards the local population. At the same time, the German propaganda played a role in this process, and the Romanians were subjects to it. In the same time, it is crucial to say that a large number of officers and soldiers from the Central Powers were present in the Romanian Capital in the analyzed period. And we also want to determine what was the real impact of the theatrical and cinematic activities controlled by the German censorship and how significant was the Romanian audience.
