Fast assessment of the critical principal stress direction for multiple separated multiaxial loadings
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 33
Abstract
The critical plane calculation for multiaxial damage assessment is often a demanding task, particularly for large FEM models of real components. Anyway, in actual engineering requests, sometime, it is possible to take advantage of the specific properties of the investigated case. This paper deals with the problem of a mechanical component loaded by multiple, but “time-separated”, multiaxial external loads. The specific material damage is dependent from the max principal stress variation with a significant mean stress sensitivity too. A specifically fitted procedure was developed for a fast computation, at each node of a large FEM model, of the direction undergoing the maximum fatigue damage; the procedure is defined according to an effective stress definition based on the max principal stress amplitude and mean value. The procedure is presented in a general form, applicable to the similar cases.

Analysis of the causes of failure in 5Cr-1Mo pipes mounted in a preheating furnace
The oxidation resistance of iron-based alloys depends on the formation of thin protective films consisting of reaction products between the alloys and the ambient atmosphere. The high corrosion resistance of Fe-Cr-...
Experimental evaluation of plasticity-induced crack shielding from crack tip displacements fields
In this work it is proposed a methodology for the evaluation of plasticity-induced crack shielding from the analysis of the crack tip displacements fields measured by digital image correlation. This methodology i...
Damage tolerance analysis of aircraft reinforced panels
This work is aimed at reproducing numerically a campaign of experimental tests performed for the development of reinforced panels, typically found in aircraft fuselage. The bonded reinforcements can significantly reduce...
Some experimental observations of crack-tip mechanics with displacement data
In the past two decades, crack-tip mechanics has been increasingly studied with full-field techniques. Within these techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been most widely used due to its many advantages...
