Flaw-tolerance of nonlocal discrete systems and interpretationaccording to network theory
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 29
Abstract
Discrete systems are modeled as a network of nodes (particles, molecules, or atoms) linked bynonlinear springs to simulate the action of van der Waals forces. Such systems are nonlocal if links connectingnon-adjacent nodes are introduced. For their topological characterization, a nonlocality index (NLI) inspired bynetwork theory is proposed. The mechanical response of 1D and 2D nonlocal discrete systems is predictedaccording to finite element (FE) simulations based on a nonlinear spring element for large displacementsimplemented in the FE programme FEAP. Uniaxial force-displacement responses of intact and defectivesystems (with links or nodes removed) are numerically simulated. Strain localization phenomena, size-scaleeffects and the ability to tolerate defects are investigated by varying the degree of nonlocality.

Interference fit effect on holed single plates loaded with tension-tension stresses
This paper deals with the influence of interference fit coupling on the fatigue strength of holed plates. The effect was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Axial fatigue tests have been carried out o...
Comparison of two multiaxial fatigue models applied to dental implants
This paper presents two multiaxial fatigue life prediction models applied to a commercial dental implant. One model is called Variable Initiation Length Model and takes into account both the crack initiation and...
Crack growth simulation in heterogeneous material by S-FEM and comparison with experiments
Fully automatic fatigue crack growth simulation system is developed using S-version FEM (SFEM). This system is extended to fracture in heterogeneous material. In the heterogeneous material, crack tip stress field...
A numerical study of squeeze-film damping in MEMS-based structures including rarefaction effects
In a variety of MEMS applications, the thin film of fluid responsible of squeeze-film damping results to be rarefied and, thus, not suitable to be modeled though the classical Navier-Stokes equation. The simplest w...
A non-linear procedure for the numerical analysis of crack development in beams failing in shear
In this work, a consistent formulation for the representation of concrete behavior before and after cracking has been implemented into a non-linear model for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, nam...
