Flow-Injection Spectrophotometric Determination Of Nitarate In Wastewater Samples Using Diazotization Coupling Reaction
Journal Title: Applied Science Reports - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
The development and application of a simple and sensitive batch and flow- injection spectrophotometric method for nitrite and nitrate determinations had been described. In this study, the method was based on the diazo-coupling reaction between acidified NDMPDAH and resorcinol. Under alkaline conditions the azo dye was formed, which absorption reaches maximum at 472 nm. Nitrate was reduced to nitrite in amalgamated cadmium reductor column and analyzed as nitrite. The developed flow-injection analysis system was applied for determination of nitrite and nitrate in the linear range of (0.2 – 5.0) μg/ml and (0.3 – 6.0) μg/ml, with detection limits of 0.09 μg/ml and 0.15 μg/ml and rates of sampling 70 and 60 S/h, with the RSD% and Error% of (0.243%, 0.548%) and (– 1.6%, + 1.66%), respectively, by using sample volume of 125 μl. The influences of some interference on the batch and flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of nitrate have been described. To eliminate the effect of some cationic interferences such as (Cr3+, Cd2+, Co2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+) two methods have been used; the first was column of cationic exchanger (H+–form) with 25-cm length of packing and flow rate of 0.5 ml/min, while the second was using 5.0% of EDTA solution, the results showed that EDTA solution gave superior results than the use of the cation exchanger column. 3.25 ml of 5.0% EDTA solution was charged with the sample of nitrate before injection to avoid the influence of those cations.Nitrate content of wastewater samples in different locations in Erbil city have been successfully determined using the flow-injection analysis method.
