Ischemic brain stroke as a first symptom of infective endocarditis in a girl with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis

Abstract
The authors present a case of a 10 months-old girl with congenital heart disease – bicuspid aortic valve. Heart disease was diagnosed shortly after birth due to systolic heart murmur. During the first month of life aortic stenosis has been increasing, and therefore there was a successful balloon aortic valvuloplasty performed. The outcome was good not only right after treatment, but after 4 months as well (there was only a mild aortic regurgitation without stenosis). In 9th month of life the infant has been admitted to the hospital because of a severe ischemic stroke which was the first symptom of infective endocarditis. During the disease the aortic valve has been destroyed, and as a consequence the girl required cardiosurgery. In the case of an ischemic stroke that has occurred in a child with congenital heart disease especially after medical invasive procedures infective endocarditis should be considered.
