Knowledge of Critical Care Provider on Prevention of Ventilator AssociatedPneumonia

Abstract
Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)continues to be an important cause of morbidity andmortality in ventilated patient. Prevention of VAP incritically ill patient is significant concern for health careteam in intensive care units (ICUs). Knowledge onprevention of VAP would have a significant impact onpatient outcome. Aims and Objectives: To assessknowledge on prevention of VAP in critical care providersand to find the association between knowledgeon prevention of VAP and educational qualification andyears of experience in ICUs. Settings and Design:The study was conducted in 5 different ICUs ofKasturba Hospital, Manipal, and using descriptive studydesign. Material and Methods: The study involved apurposive sample of 138 critical care providers. Criticalcare providers who were willing to participate inthe study were included. Tools on demographic proformaand self-administered structured knowledgequestionnaire on prevention of VAP were developedand content validity was established. The reliability ofthe tools was established.The data was categorized andanalyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.The SPSS 16.0 version was used for the analysis ofthe study. Result: Majority 89.1% of the participantwere 20-29 years, 63% unmarried 51.4% had completeddiploma course and majority 81.2% were fromnursing discipline. The study revealed that only 55.80%of subjects were having adequate knowledge on preventionof VAP based on median score. There was nosignificant association between knowledge score andeducational qualification (÷²=0, p=0.833), years of experiencein ICU (÷²= 2.221, p=0.329).
