Nietzsche and the Question of Music.

Journal Title: The Polish Journal of Aesthetics - Year 2001, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The presentation of Nietzsche philosphy of musie and its connection with Wagner's musie is the subject of the above considerations. The history of art is motivated - according to Nietzsche - by two opposite elements that of Apollo and that of Dionysus. They come from the very nature of the world. The Apollo elements bring beauty and .ethics; while Dionysus elements reveal the process of becoming and the double nature of the world connecting in itself good and evil, suffering and bliss. The Dionysus' wisdom manifests itself in mythical thinking and ancient tragedy, the basis of which is choir, that is the aft sounds. Musie gets to the core of the essence of the world, gives it artistic shape pointing to where there is a genuine significance and a value of art. The symbol of perfect art is the Attic tragedy which expresses the aliance of the Apollo and Dionysian elements. For Nietzsche - art as the expression of creative power - exemplilies the form of affirmation of life.
