On-farm Evaluation of Rice Genotypes under Drought Prone Rainfed Environments

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 12, Issue 2

Abstract

vvBangladesh is now almost self-sufficient in producing rice. However, it is very much vulnerable due to abiotic stresses like drought, salinity and submergence. Drought regularly occurs on 1.6 million ha of rice land in north and northwest parts of Bangladesh due to low and erratic rainfall, and limited irrigation potential. Therefore, four advanced rice lines IR83383-B-B-129-4, IR83373-B-B-27-4, IR87707-446-B-B-B and IR82589-B-B-84-3 along with BRRI dhan56 as check were evaluated under drought prone rainfed environments to investigate the yield potential and adaptability of the rice genotypes. Twenty five-day old seedlings were transplanted from 15 to 20 August 2013 in RCBD with 3 replications at Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj, Naogoan, Joypurhat, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Jhinaidah and BRRI Gazipur. Fertilizers were applied @ 83, 15, 40, 11 and 2.7 kg NPKSZn ha-1. Drought stress was initiated at 28 DAT through proper draining of water by cutting levee from the field up to maturity. Uniform and standard management practices were followed across the experimental sites. Across the environments and genotypes, the highest grain yield (5.12 t ha-1) was obtained in IR82589-B-B-84-3 followed by IR83383-B-B-129-4 (5.01 t ha-1) at Rangpur and the lowest (2.95 t ha-1) was in IR87707-446-B-B-B at Gazipur. Interaction effect of genotypes and locations for grain yield, growth duration, plant height, panicles m-2, 1000-grain weight, grains panicle-1 and sterility was highly significant at 0.01 level. Most of the tested entries performed better than the check variety BRRI dhan56 under drought stress. Across the locations, mean yield of IR82589-B-B-84-3, IR83383-B-B-129-4 and IR83373-B-B-27-4 was comparable and it was 4.45, 4.41 and 4.33 t ha-1, respectively that was significantly higher than the check BRRI dhan56 (3.74 t ha-1). Across the locations, the crop experienced medium to severe drought stress at reproductive phase so that mean yield was a bit lower compared to favorable condition. Average growth duration of the advanced lines ranged from 107-118 days while mean plant height ranged from 99-109 cm. Thousand-grain weight of the genotypes ranged from 23.7-25.0 g and it was 23.7 g for the check variety. Mean sterility of the genotypes, ranged from 21-29% which was in acceptable range for drought stress. Phenotypic acceptability of IR82589-B-B-84-3 and IR83383-B-B-129-4 was found better compared to IR83373-B-B-27-4, IR87707-446-B-B-B and BRRIdhan56 especially for its erect and green flag leaf even at ripening. Among the genotypes, IR82589-B-B-84-3 and IR83383-B-B-129-4 were selected for drought-prone rainfed environments.
