Porous Structures of Activated Carbons Derived from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch by Phosphoric Acid Activation under Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Oil palm empty fruit bunch is a solid waste which was used as raw material for the activated carbon productions. Preparation was carried out by chemical process using phosphoric acid activation. The result shows that oil palm empty fruit bunch was successfully converted to be porous activated carbons. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption data exhibit a combination of the Type I and IV isotherms indicating the micro- and mesopores characterizations. The presence of widely hysteresis loops at relative pressure higher than 0.4 associated with the capillary condensation as a well mesoporous development. The maximum BET surface area was obtained to be 451 m2 g-1 consisting of micropores and mesopores surface area of 244 m2g-1 and 207 m2g-1, respectively.
