STUDY OF INFERIOR LIMBAL CONJUNCTIVAL AUTOGRAFT FOR PRIMARY PTERYGIUM

Abstract
Pterygium is triangular sheet of fibrovascular tissue enchroaching on the cornea which is disturbing to patient for sight and the surgeon for its recurrences.[b] AIM:[/b] 1) To study the recurrence following Inferior Limbal Conjunctival Autograft in cases of primary pterygium. 2) To study change in astigmatism following Inferior Limbal conjunctival autograft. [b]MATERIAL AND METHODS: [/b]30 consecutive patients from September 2012 to September 2013 presenting with primary pterygium were screened and randomly selected in the ophthalmology OPD at Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumkur and were operated. Patient with recurrent, double headed and complicated pterygium were excluded. The patients were evaluated for 1 year after the surgery. [b]OBSERVATION[/b]: In our study 63% of the patients were outdoor workers and 70% were males. Post- operative 53.33% patient had improvement in vision and 33.33% had stabilization of visual acuity. Self-Limiting graft oedema was the commonest complication in post-operative period. At the end of 1 year 53.33% patient had change in astigmatism and 40% patient showed stabilization of astigmatism. We had 6.66% cases of recurrence at the end of 1 year. [b]CONCLUSION:[/b] Thus in our study we conclude that use of Inferior Limbal Conjunctival autograft in a primary pterygium can prevent recurrence and provide acceptable outcome at the primary surgery with no sight threatening complication. This can be the procedure of choice in patients who are glaucoma suspects and patients with recurrence after a superior conjunctival autograft
