The beginnings of the Christianization of the Slavs and Avars on the middle Danube

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 1

Abstract

In the article, we intend to examine the early stages of penetration and establishment of Christianity in the middle Danube region, in the Early Middle Ages. The intensity of political and cultural pressure made by the Frankish Empire, the Avar Khaganate decomposition, and the transformation of power relations that followed in the middle Danube basin and its surroundings – all these have influenced the social and cultural development of this region. What interest us especially are the manner in which these direct relations with the Frankish Empire influenced the beginning and the development of Christianization process, and the manner in which the religious institutions and missionary Franks centers came into this process, in terms of ambitions and real possibilities.
