The study involves two groups of farmers (Fadama II farmers and non Fadama II farmers) as the respondents selected by multistage sampling technique. The descriptive analysis shows the distribution of respondents by age, sex, educational level, household size, farm size and farming experience. The poverty index indicate the poverty status of the respondents which was categorized into two groups namely: Poor and non-poor farming households. Probit regression analysis shows the relationship between the poverty level and the socio economic characteristics of both the Fadama II and the non Fadama II farming households. It revealed that educational level, household size, farm size and non-food expenditure have significant implication on the poverty level among the Fadama II farming household while household size, farm size and food expenditure are significant on the poverty level of the non fadama11 farming household.
