The effect of thickness on out-of-plane constraint in terms of the T-stress
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 30
Abstract
The plastic zone is theoretically and numerically analyzed for various combinations of the nonsingular terms xx T to zz T ratios in connection with specimen thickness under mode I loading. The plastic zone size distribution is based on the Mises yield criterion for mode I conditions and mapped in the specimen thickness direction. It is shown that the plastic zone size is affected by the zz T -stress, i.e. there is strong effect of out-of-plane constraint (thickness) on crack tip plastic zones. In addition, to study the effect of thickness and loading mode mixity (mode I and II) of the specimen on the singular (KI, KII) and the non-singular ( xx T , zz T ) terms along the 3D crack front, three-dimensional stress fields are analyzed by means of finite element analysis. The strong effect of thickness and mixed mode loading conditions on the zz T -stress is observed. At the same time, there is not the effect of thickness on the nonsingular xx T -stress at the same loading conditions.

Influence of crack offset distance on the interaction of multiple cracks on the same side in a rectangular plate
In the present work finite element method has been employed to study the interaction of multiple cracks in a finite rectangular plate of unit thickness with cracks on the same side under uniaxial loading condition...
Characterisation of crack tip fields under non-uniform fatigue loading
The paper analyses previously reported work, which uses digital image correlation to measure fatigue crack closure. As well as determining crack opening loads, the information on crack shape may be used to estimate the s...
Fractography as a tool to assess the occurrence of fatigue fractures in complex microstructure structural components
Fractographic assessment of fatigue fractures may be difficult if they occur in metallic components characterized by low ductility complex microstructures. In these cases reconciliation of known fatigue ruptu...
Considerations on the choice of experimental parameters in residual stress measurements by hole-drilling and ESPI
Residual stresses occur in many manufactured structures and components. Great number of investigations have been carried out to study this phenomenon. Over the years, different techniques have been developed to m...
Analysis on the growth of different shapes of mineral microcracks in microwave field
Microwave heating-assisted ore grinding and crushing can effectively increase the dissociation energy of minerals and decrease energy consumption. Microcrack growth and distribution characteristics inside dif...
