Journal Title: Nowa Pediatria - Year 2015, Vol 19, Issue 4
Abstract
Aspiration of foreign bodies into the airways in young children are common events. They are the life-threatening conditions and the most common indications for bronchoscopy in childhood. Even only a suspicion of the airways foreign body is an indication for urgent bronchoscopy. The episode of chocking in children with non specific symptoms or even absence of characteristic symptoms are an indication for rapid pediatric and radiology procedures. Lack of chocking episode in medical history can delay final diagnosis and then recurrent pneumonia or bronchopneumonia may lead to the proper diagnosis. Radiolucent foreign bodies on X-ray may cause atelectasis, emphysema or air trapping. Metal foreign bodies are radiopaque. Exceptionally it happens incorrect assessment of chest X-ray performed in patient after aspiration of a foreign body, what is described in this study. 13-month-old boy after the episode of chocked unknown foreign body was treated due to obstructive bronchitis and because of GERD. The chest X-ray did not revealed the metal wire, the part of LED bulb and glass part of the bulb was not visible in the X-ray. Bronchoscopy was performed after a week of foreign body inhaled and the bulb was taken out.
