Variation and heritability of marketable leaf yield components in fluted pumpkin.

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Twenty five genotypes of fluted pumpkin collected from different agro-ecological zones in Nigeria were evaluated to determine the extent of genetic variability among the genotypes and to examine their performance across four environments in Randomized Complete Block Design. Significant (P≤0.05) main effect for environment, genotype and genotype by environment interaction for growth parameters and marketable leaf yield (MKY) were observed from the analysis of variance. Genotype Fte42 had the highest marketable leaf yield. High heritability estimates with high genetic advance were observed for leaf area, leaf fresh weight, vine fresh weight and MKY. Repeatability estimates ranged from 0.001 to 0.482 for vine girth and leaf area respectively. MKY can be improved by selecting for vine length and leaf area in this crop. Selection for improved MKY could be predicted if the choice of genotypes can be based on: high GCV: PCV ratio, high heritability, high genetic advance and high repeatability.
