Variations of Lung Fissures: A Cadaveric Study

Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: The presence of fissures in the normallungs enhances uniform expansion and hence facilitatesmore air intake. Accessory and incomplete fissuresof varying depth can be seen in unusual locationsof the lung, delimiting abnormal lobes which correspondto the normal bronchopulmonary segments. The knowledgeof anatomical variations of lung fissures is essentialfor clinicians, surgeons, and for radiologist for recognizingvarious images of related abnormalities becausean accessory or anomalous fissure can be mistakenfor a lung lesion or an atypical appearance ofpleural effusion. Aims and Objectives: The aim of thepresent study is to observe the variations of lung fissuresin Indian population. Fifty pairs (right- 50; left-50) of lungs were used for this study. Each lung wasstudied carefully for number of fissures whether completeor incomplete or absent. Presences of accessoryfissures were noted. Results: We observed completeabsence of fissures in two right and left lungs. Accessoryfissures were present in 38% right lungs and 32%in left lungs. Conclusion: Incidence of absence ofoblique fissure and accessory fissure was greater inour present work when compared our results with otherauthors. Considering this we feel that more elaborativestudy should be done on this topic which will throwmore light on this.
