Need for Oral Biology to be taught in first year of BDS program in Pakistan
Journal Title: Isra Medical Journal - Year 2018, Vol 10, Issue 3
Abstract
Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a four-year program in Pakistan as opposed to five-year program in most developed countries. Oral Biology is a preclinical dental subject, which is taught in all colleges in Pakistan. There is currently debate whether oral biology should be taught in first year or second year as there are conflicting recommendations from the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council that recommend oral biology be taught in second year of the four year BDS program while Higher Education Commission has stated in its recent guidelines that oral biology be taught in first year of the five year BDS curriculum1, 2. It is proposed in evidence based dental education that improved learning outcomes can be obtained by establishing early link between pre-clinical course work and clinical context so students will be able to recognize practical relevance of curriculum during their pre- clinical anatomical courses3. International guidelines of Oral Biology propose that dental curriculum should be planned in such a manner that Oral biology co should be taught as a preclinical subject alongside basic health sciences as a separate entity4. Oral Biology can easily be horizontally integrated with other basic sciences in first year thereby reducing redundancy in dental curriculum and early clinical exposure of first year students will fit snugly in to the much-hyped competency based dental education model5. Based on strong body of evidence and international guidelines, it is hereby proposed that oral biology be taught in first year of BDS program with potential practical implications in community outreach dental programs to enhance social accountability and thereby assist in decreasing the burden of oral diseases in Pakistan.
