Neoplatonism as a Step towards Islamic Philosophy: A Comparison of Metaphysics between Proclus and Al-Farabi

Abstract
Neoplatonism was no doubt one of the most influential currents on Islamic philosophy. Works of the two leading figures of this movement, namely The Enneads of Plotinus and The Elements of Theology of Proclus, were thought to be Aristotle’s books in Arabic literature under the respective titles Uthūlūjiyā and al-Khayr al-Maḥḍ during a period in which the great philosopher al-Fārābī was active. What made these two works particularly important in the history of Islamic Philosophy was the traces their contents left on such key concepts as ‘one’, ‘intellect’, ‘soul’, and ‘emanation’. This article attempts a metaphysical comparison between Proclus and al-Fārābī in the context of the above-mentioned books and thus aims at contributing to the study of the Neoplatonist influence on Islamic Philosophy.
