NEW MATERIALS FOR KNEE ENDOPROSTHESIS PADS

Abstract

Knee endoprosthesis along with hip endoprosthesis are the most often applied implants and demand for this type of endoprosthesis is growing each year. Basic material for this type of knee friction elements (pads) is ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Due to insufficient mechanical properties of UHMWPE new material for this application is being investigated that is characterized by high wear resistance. The work contains conception of manufacturing of polymer composite strengthen by metal mesh. Authors have described material used for composite manufacturing, metal mesh manufacturing and implementation of the mesh into polymer matrix. Authors present results of friction tests on T-05 tester, compression and creep tests results. The results obtained on constructed in INOP knee simulator SBT-02 are also presented.<br/><br/>
