New Method for Evaluating Quality of Layers and Coatings of Inner Surfaces of Barrel Arms

Abstract

The paper presents a method for evaluating the quality of the layers in relation to the methods of manufacturing aerological systems on internal and external surfaces of a pipe applicable to production of barrels of small arms. For example, research on technologies of thermo-chemical, developed in the Institute of Precision Mechanics (Warsaw, Poland), presented the results of the assessment of the quality of nitrided layers on the inner surfaces of the barrel caliber 5.56 mm, PVD coatings for pipes with a diameter greater than 30 mm. The possibilities of rapid and precise evaluation of the quality and the structure of layers and coatings on spherical cut using “Kulotester”, and on diagonal cut performed around the traces of indents of hardness measurements with the new test method Baltest-M, which is complementary to research in surface engineering, especially for the evaluation of layers ductility. Examples of application of a new method were referred to classical metallographic techniques for assessing the quality of layers and coatings obtained by the methods of controlled gas nitriding, carbonitriding, and chromium plating bath.
