New somaclone of viand plantain (Musa AAB) obtained by biotechnological techniques
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2003, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Results obtained from Plant Breeding Programs on Musa spp. In the tissue culture Laboratory at INIVIT since 1987 is presented. Procedures described by IAEA with some modifications for mutation induction through in vitro culture were used. Meristematic sproutings (2-3 mm) from in vitro formed buds were isolated. Ionizan radiaton were carried out in a Cobalt 60 source at a rate of 50 Gy. A somaclone (Z-13) is generalized due the following characteristics; tolerance to Black Sigatoka disease (Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet), average height of 2.70 m, a bunch in a truncated cone shape with 16.5 fingers per hand and a predominantly astringent taste, the stem is under soil level to have a better anchoar and a higher yield. Morphologic and molecular characterization showed the differences within selected variants in relation to the donor. The new mutant is proposed to be registered as a new cultivar by The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Advanced growers from Villa Clara and Ciego de Ávila, Cuba participated in the selection program.

Effect of selenite and inulin on the Capsicum annuum L. - Phytophthora capsici interaction in greenhouse
Capsicum annuum L. is a crop of great economic importance in Mexico and is severely affected by the wilt caused by Phytophthora capsici. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of selenite and inulin on th...
Protocol for isolation of Moniliophthora roreri (Cif and Par) Evans et al. from cacao fruits cv. ‘National’ in the Ecuadorian Amazonia
Moniliophthora roreri is a pathogen of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) that causes high economic losses in Ecuador. This paper is intended to present a protocol for the isolation of the pathogen from cocoa fruits cv. ‘Natio...
Oxidative burst in plant-pathogen interaction
The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via consumption of oxygen in a so-called oxidative burst is a hallmark of successful recognition of infection and activation of plant defenses. ROS are not only toxic by-...
Agricultural yield of potato lines planted out of season of plantation in a mountainous area
The present investigation was developed with the objective of evaluating the agricultural yield of four potato lines out of season of plantation. The lines IBP-27, IBP-30, IBP-101 and IBP-107 (obtained for the Potato Bre...
Effect of 60Co gamma radiation on plant regeneration of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cultivar 'ICA Pijao' via indirect organogenesis
In Phaseolus vulgaris L. breeding programs has been used mutation induction, however, no radiosensitivity studies have been performed in vitro in order to define the optimal dose of radiation to be applied. The aim of...
