NICKNAMES USED IN BODRUM TOWN IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY (TOGETHER WITH LIST OF HOUSE OWNERS)

Abstract

In this study, nicknames, which are important symbols for distinguishing and easily recognizing of people living together, has been dealth with in Bodrum Town example. Temettûat Registers of Bodrum Town recorded in 1845 and belonging to the nine neighborhoods form the main source of this study. Family names, occupations and nicknames which take part in this Registers inform us in the socio-cultural field. Evaluating the registers within the research household heads were substantially recorded with their nicknames. That is to say, it is determined from the registers that household heads with a nickname comprised %65,7 of total number of household heads. Giving a nickname to a household head, were considered his various features, such as distinctive physical appearance, attitudes and behaviors, socio-economic status, profession, origin and ethnicity. Nicknames were used for(as) both the name of the family and head of household. Eventually, with this study in Bodrum Town example, it is aimed to reveal. Nicknames which have a significant function to maintain so-called culture and to transfer its heritage to the next generations.
