NICOLA I, PRINCE OF MONTENEGRO, AND HIS SON-IN-LAW, PRINCE PETER KARADJORDJEVIC’S CLAIMS ON THE THRONE OF SERBIA
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42
Abstract
Being the ruler of Montenegro from 1860 to 1918, Prince Nicola had a very ambitious personality and desired to reestablish the Empire of Serbia and unite Montenegro and Serbia. Having compelled her daughter to marry Prince Peter Karadjordjevic, who was the son of the overthrown Prince of Serbia, Alexander Karadjordjevic, Prince Nicola advanced towards his objective step by step both through his son-in-law and his own efforts. However, after the death of his daughter in 1890, his son-in-law would leave Montenegro and the path of these two were to separate. Peter Karadjordjevic had never abandon his claim on the throne of Serbia and succeeded to his much desired throne, as the consequence of the Alexander Obrenovic, the King of Serbia’s death by means of a coup d’état in 1903. Prince Nicola’s dreams came to naught as his old son-in-law became king. In this study, the objectives, claims and operations of these two persons on the throne of Serbia were going to be discussed.
