Journal Title: FOLIA GEOGRAPHICA - Year 2011, Vol 52, Issue 1

Abstract

The recent rapid development of the Internet technology has also influenced the geospatial applications. Geographic information systems have transformed from a computer-based system to a network-based technology. The most recent development in this area is represented by Google Maps and Google Earth. Google Maps application provides online mapping features based on the street maps, orthophotomaps and terrain maps supplemented by various multimedia, location-based features such as photographs, videos, webcams, wikipedia links or StreetView. Google Earth is a powerful 3-D visualization tool providing interactive virtual 3-D landscape models. Both applications bring new possibilities for location-based services and marketing activities of organizations operating over large areas.
