Nutritional treatment of neoplasmatic diseases

Abstract

Cancer cachexia is one of the most frequent complication of neoplasmatic disease, especially in advanced cancer. It is accompanied by loss of appetite , hence “cachexia/anorexia” is a frequent used term. The mentioned condition is closely connected with the worse tolerance of oncology treatment, shorter lifespan and a lower quality of life and for this reason is a poor prognostic factor. Among patients with normal function of alimentary track enteral nutrition is being performed. In case of patients, who have problems with assimilation of nutrients through intestines parenteral nutrition is used. The purpose of this article is to present some guiding principles concerning nutrition published by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism in 2006 and general methods of treatment of patients suffering from cancer cachexia definited by Edmonton Regional Palliative Care Program (ERPCP).
