Journal Title: MedPulse -International Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

PROM is one of the common obstetric problem and cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Aim: The main aim of present study is to know the incidence, etiopathology, associated risk factor and maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and management and prevention. Material and Methods: The study was done in OBG Dept BRIMS Hospital Bidar, Karnataka, India, where the number of deliveries during the study period were 7526. Result: There were 220 cases of PROM i.e. incidence of 2.9%. PROM was higher in rural areas, primigravida, common after 37 weeks and majority delivered by LSCS. Maternal morbidity was 16.35%,no maternal mortality. Neonatal morbidity was 5.45% and neonatal mortality was 0.9% and the cause being preterm and low birth weight. Conclusion: PROM was associated with prematurity and low birth weight, thus lead to high perinatal mortality; Maternal & neonatal morbidity were also increased. A proper plan of “Aggressive management” irrespective of gestational age is the strategy to decrease maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
