Occult Hepatitis B in Hemodialysis Patients
Journal Title: Viral Hepatitis Journal - Year 2019, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
Objectives: We aimed to detect occult hepatitis B (OHB) in hemodialysis patients at a higher-risk for OHB. Materials and Methods: The study included 567 patients with chronic renal failure aged 18 years and older who underwent hemodialysis in 10 dialysis centers in İzmir province between May 2013 and July 2013. Hepatitis B surface-antigen (HBsAg), anti-hepatitis B core (HBc) immunoglobulin G (IgG) and anti-HBs were detected by ELISA and HBV-DNA levels with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Detection of HBsAg negativity with HBV-DNA positivity was considered as OHB. Results: Of 567 patients, 49% were male and the mean age was 62.2 years. All the patients were HBsAg-negative. Isolated anti- HBc IgG positivity was detected in 8 patients while HBV-DNA was negative. Serum HBV-DNA level was 270 IU/mL in only one patient (0.2%) who was anti-HBc IgG-negative. Conclusion: HBsAg alone is not an adequate serological test to detect HBV infection. HBV-DNA should be tested using molecular diagnostic methods in patients with suspected OHB. Further studies investigating cost-effectiveness and the role of PCR in diagnosis are warranted.

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Seroprevalence of Turkish and Foreign Patients of Reproductive Age in 2014-2017
Objectives: Cross-country migration may affect the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Due to the recent war in Syria, there has been a serious exodus towards Turkey. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the hep...
A Comparison of Needle Types and Biopsy Techniques Used in Liver Biopsies of Chronic Hepatitis B Patients
Objectives: To investigate the effect of the biopsy technique used in percutaneous liver biopsies applied with semi-automatic 16 gauge (G) and 18G Tru-cut and Menghini aspiration needles in patients with chronic hepatiti...
Evaluation of Treatment Results with Direct Acting Antiviral Drugs of Cirrhotic/Non-cirrhotic Chronic Liver Disease Caused by Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 1b Infection
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) on the virological response and on the some parameters used to evaluate liver function in cases with chronic liver...
Evaluation of Serum CTNNβ1 and E-cadherin Levels in Hepatitis Patients
Objectives: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the leading causes of hepatocellular carcinoma, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are quite complex. In this study, the aim was to reveal the relationship of...
