Ocena sprawności dwuzadaniowej jako element nowoczesnej rehabilitacji w geriatrii

Journal Title: Rehabilitacja w Praktyce - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

In Poland, there is a general scarcity of published data on dual-tasking (DT) activities in the domain of physical rehabilitation. The dual-tasking paradigm, applied with a view to assess e.g. falls risk in the elderly, has been used around the world for less than two decades. The encouraging results of the present study reveal a significant potential for this paradigm to be applied in both physical and mental activity training. Single-tasking and dual-tasking activities differ not only in the effector’s responses, but also in affecting different brain structures. This seems to be of particular consequence with regard to a steadily increasing number of elderly post-stroke patients, characterised by mild cognitive impairment and some dementia. The present review aimes to provide some insights into the dual-tasking physical activities of the motor-motor and motor-cognitive type, put them into a much broader context, as well as offer some specific pointers with regard to hands-on application of these findings in regular physical rehabilitation practice, as pursued by a therapeutic team.
