Odontogenic cysts in tertiary care institute: Its prevalence and characteristics

Abstract
Background: Odontogenic cysts are the most common form of cystic lesions that affect the maxillofacial region. They are classified traditionally into a developmental group, including keratocysts and dentigerous cysts, and an inflammatory group including radicular cysts. Aims and Objectives: To determine the prevalence and distribution of clinically and histologically - diagnosed odontogenic cysts. Materials and Method: In the present descriptive cross-sectional study all the cases of oral and jaw lesions attending the OPD during January 2015 to December 2016 were enrolled in the study. The demographic information of all the patients was recorded on a prestructured proforma. All the information regarding the site of the lesion and the registered histopathological diagnosis was recorded. The samples (cases) with incomplete information and indefinite diagnosis were excluded. All histologically -diagnosed odontogenic cysts and tumors were appraised in terms of frequency, age, sex, and their anatomical distribution. Results: Out of total 866 patients 78 patients were confirmed to be suffering from Odontogenic cyst. Thus the prevalence of Odontogenic cyst was 9.01%. Majority of the patients with Odontogenic cyst were in the age group of 21-30 years followed by 31-40 years of age. 55.13% patients were male and 44.87%. Radicular type of odontogenic cyst was seen in 60.26%. In 55.13% of Odontogenic cyst were located in maxilla whereas remaining 44.87% were located in mandible. Conclusion: Thus we conclude that the prevalence of Odontogenic cyst was 9.01%. It was diagnosed commonly in young male. Radicular type was the most common type of Odontogenic cyst and majority of them were located in maxilla.
