Journal Title: Medzinárodné vzťahy - Year 2018, Vol 16, Issue 2
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to outline the basic sociological and politological background of the study of military coups as a special and controversial security and political field of study. It is based on an interdisciplinary understanding of the concept of a military coup. Paper points to the position and role of soldiers in politics and society in the interpretation of Western political science and sociology. It also poits to the involvement of soldiers in politics and their interference with it after the Second World War. A classification of military coups within the NATO member states are reported. Studing of military coups in contemporary Western sociology and political science is marginal in nature and where the dual approach is applied. The dilemma of whether a „bad“ military coup can contribute to a „good“ change of the undemocratic regime is investigated as well.
