Open Knee Joint Injury Score(OKJIS)-A Scoring system for open injuries of the knee joint- A Pilot Study
Journal Title: Kerala Journal of Orthopaedics - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 0
Abstract
Classification systems are useful to describe, characterize, document and compare injuries based on general and specific features. They are also essential to guide management, to provide treatment guidelines and for research activities. Classification systems available for open injuries or fractures has restrictions to be used in joints as they have anatomical and functional peculiarities. The absence of a classification system to grade the open injuries of the knee joint, which is the most commonly affected large joint in the body made us aware about the need for one and to propose the OKJIS. The study was performed at Government medical college Calicut. 100 consecutive open knee joints were included and a grading system was formulated based on 6 variables such as injuries of the extensor mechanism, intra and extra articular ligament integrity, vascular injury, soft tissue and bony injuries and other variables. The score to each variable was assigned after follow up and assessing the functional score. The maximum score an open knee could have is 18. Patients with lower OKJIS scores were found to have a better prognosis than those with higher scores.
