Operational principles of GPS receivers and methods for processing acquired data

Journal Title: Modern Innovations, Systems and Technologies - Year 2024, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

This study examines the operational principles of GPS receivers and the methodology for analyzing the data they obtain. The paper discusses the rationale for a global positioning system and provides a brief historical overview of GPS development. The research focuses on the fundamental principles of global positioning system operation, including determining the geometric position of satellites, methods for calculating coordinates and time, as well as accounting for and correcting distance and time measurement errors between satellites and receivers. The article provides a detailed analysis of the process of calculating coordinates of a point using the triangulation method based on "spheres" formed by satellites. Particular attention is paid to the multi-stage process of satellite signal processing, including time measurement, orbital error correction, and position determination. The characteristics of information transmitted by satellites and its dynamics are investigated. The authors examine key challenges in calculating receiver coordinates on the Earth's surface and describe the main algorithms used in GPS receivers to improve positioning accuracy. The paper also analyzes the principles of GPS data processing and the specifics of working with GPX files, including an overview of the main standards for their creation.
