OPTICAL, SPECTROSCOPIC AND ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISATION OF POLYAZOMETHINE PAZ

Abstract

New, low-cost materials for photovoltaic are an object of intensive studies in recent years. Thus, the new type of solar cells based on organic materials has been developed. It is called organic solar cells (OSC). Their photoactive layer is composed of donor and acceptor materials, mostly polymers and fullerenes derivatives respectively. Charge transfer (CT) from donor to acceptor is a crucial process, which decides about efficiency of OSC. Polyazomethine PAZ was synthesised in IEL Wroclaw as a new donor material for bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) OSC. Therefore, characteristic was done to check that it fulfils all requirements for this type of material. Used techniques: absorbance, photoluminescence (PL), time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). PAZ absorbs mostly visible light. Moreover its PL spectrum is shifted in direction of higher wavelengths versus their absorption spectrum. Longer decay time allows to efficient CT. Current density–voltage (J–U) characteristics of the devices based on polyazomethine PAZ and PCBM were measured along with impedance spectroscopy. Investigated polyazomethine exhibited photovoltaic effect, however power conversion efficiency depends on the weight ratio of PAZ to PCBM. Additional information about CT was obtained using EPR.
