Optimization for breeding of Tecia solanivora (Povolný, 1973) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in laboratory conditions

Journal Title: REVISTA CHILENA DE ENTOMOLOGÍA - Year 2022, Vol 48, Issue 3

Abstract

The Guatemalan potato moth Tecia solanivora (Povolný), is one of the main pests of the potato crop, affecting yields in the field and storage conditions. Different strategies have been developed for its control, such as the use of pesticides, biological control, ethological and cultural control. For the development of research focused on the aforementioned management strategies, it is necessary to have a breeding of insects that allows the constant supply of individuals (adults, eggs, larvae) with similar geno and phenotypic characteristics to ensure the execution of the tests and the validity of results. Currently, there is a medium-scale laboratory rearing of T. solanivora with a standardized protocol. However, it is necessary to optimize the criteria for egg and adult production to reduce production costs. The aim of this study was to optimize egg and adult production; for egg production was evaluated two treatments (50 and 70 adults), and for adult production, three treatments were evaluated (3500, 4500, 5500 eggs). The maximum egg collection time is 5.15 days, finding no differences between the two densities evaluated. To produce adults, a directly proportional relationship was evidenced, as the egg density increases, the production of adults increases in the order of 500 adults per 1000 viable eggs. The optimization of these parameters allowed the reduction of labor and inputs in the insect production process, without affecting the current characteristics of the insect rearing.
