Oral and denture hygiene practices of patients using removable prosthetic appliances

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction: Rehabilitation treatment by means of removable prosthetic appliances is successful only if the following basic factors are considered: oral hygiene, hygiene of appliances, patient’s motivation and awareness of their proper handling and maintenance, and periodic check-ups. Aim of the study: To evaluate patients’ awareness regarding proper care of the mouth and removable dentures. Material and methods: There were 74 patients aged between 27-78 yrs. presenting at the Department of Dental Prosthetics of Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The study was based on a questionnaire and clinical examination. Questions covered oral hygiene practices and care of prosthetic appliances with emphasis on nocturnal discontinuation and cleaning methods. Patients were also clinically examined to determine denture plaque and dental plaque by means of a plaque index. Results: It was concluded that patients had limited awareness of maintaining prosthetic and oral hygiene. There is a strict correlation between prosthetic and oral hygiene status and dental and mucous membrane ailments. Shorter periods of denture wearing was another important factor. Conclusions: Most patients required improvement of their prosthetic and oral hygiene. Prosthetic treatment cannot be commenced prior to the patient’s instituting adequate oral hygiene practices.
