Abstract

Proverbs are the sum of a society’s history and experiences. They reflect the cultural and social values of the society. Because of its cultural continuity, they establish a bridge from past to present. Most of proverbs have a rhyming outer structure. On the other hand, its inner structure has a multilayered meaning richness. In this regard, proverbs with the help of harmonious and ingenious narrating transfer Turkish oral culture from generation to generation. It is possible to classify proverbs according to their subjects. Some are of lessons about life, some are about customs, some are about rules of society. As they are commonly accepted, they form the rules depending on customs and traditions in periods when there were no written laws.
