Origin of Gharana System in Hindustani Classical Music: A Study

Abstract

‘Gharana’, a term used to denote the style of singing of a Hindustani Classical musician which is learnt by his / her disciple to carry forward and the tradition goes on through the lineages. However, the origin of Shastriya Sangeet Gharana system has not been traced accurately .Prabandha Yug or era, ancient Vedic period leaves hint of its origin. In the mediaeval period , a great decline of Dhrupad singing took place and Khayal was formed from Dhrupad. It is believed that, with the advent of Mughal era , Classical Gharana system was established. With the crowning of the emperor Aurangzeb, court musicians were banished to princely States. These cornered musicians established themselves through their talent of singing style and passed on to their disciple for furtherance. With the passage of time these singing styles reshaped into different Gharanas. In the present time , it seems that ,Gharana system has become outdated. But still today one can feel the flavour of style, voice throw, Gayaki etc, in pure traditional Hindustani Classical Music. This is because Gharanas still continues to influence Classical Singers. This present study , attempted to document and enlighten the origin of Gharana System.
