Orthodontic and prosthetic treatment in a patient with a cleft palate. Case report
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 1
Abstract
Cleft lip and palate are the most common developmental defect of the facial skeleton. A team of specialists treating such cleft defects includes paediatricians, plastic surgeons, phoniatrists and speech specialists, as well as dental surgeons of various specialities. Due to anomalies of the alveolar process and teeth near the cleft, occlusal defects and deformation of the prosthetic field combined treatment is necessary. In some cases a patient does not give their consent for orthodontic surgical treatment. In such cases an alternative regimen of orthodontic and prosthetic treatment has to be applied. Aim. The article aimed to present a case of a patient with cleft lip and palate who received prosthetic rehabilitation combined with orthodontic, periodontologic and endodontic treatment. Material and methods. Analysis of medical documentation of a 22-yearold male patient with cleft lip and palate. Results. The patient receiving surgical and orthodontic treatment since birth did not give his consent for surgical procedures to correct a skeletal malocclusion. Therefore, an alternative regimen of orthodontic and prosthetic treatment was applied. Conclusions. Significant improvement in the functions of the masticatory organ was obtained, but without improvement in the facial features. Satisfactory aesthetic outcomes regarding dentition and smile were obtained, and the patient’s self-assessment was significantly improved. (Gładkowski J, Szczyrek P, Dudziński M, Jurek A, Zadurska M.
