Orthofix in management of compound tibia fractures – A prospective study
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Orthopedics - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Objective: Treatment of open tibia fracture is complex. Orthofix-Limb Reconstruction system can be used as definitive fixation of open tibia fractures with reliable results. Aim of this study is to evaluate outcome of the open tibial fractures treated with Orthofix. Method: The study is prospective study involving 30 patients with open Tibial fractures at our hospital. The patients were treated with wound debridement and stabilisation with Orthofix and followed up from August 2014 to April 2017. Then the patients were followed up to evaluate clinically, functionally by Lower Extremity Functional Score (LEFS) and radiologically by Radiographic union scale in Tibial fractures (RUST). Results: All the 30 patients included in our study had achieved bone union (100%).One patient (3.33%) had delayed union and required bone grafting and fibulectomy. The mean follow up period is 32.6 weeks. The average period taken for fracture union is 24.4 weeks. The mean LEFS score for the 30 patients at the end of follow up is 88.75%. The mean RUST score at the end of follow up is 2.6. Conclusion: Orthofix serves as external fixator and definitive fixation device as it allows dynamisation. Hence Orthofix is a very good device in Open tibial fracture management if proper rehabilitation measures and proper timing of dynamisation is followed.

Post polio limb fracture management in a 65 years old patient
Background: Polio is a virus which affects anterior horn cells, resulting in isolated muscle weakness and paralysis. It has been estimated that approximately 80% of those with polio will experience new symptoms 30-40 yea...
A randomized controlled trial comparing outcomes of k wire removal at 4 weeks vs. 6 weeks of lateral condyle fractures of humerus in children
Background and Objectives: Lateral condyle humerus fractures are the most common distal humeral fractures in children. They are associated with higher rate of complications and the results of non-operative management are...
A randomized controlled trial on management of distal radius fractures with plating followed by pronator quadratus repair versus no repair in a tertiary care hospital in Andhra Pradesh, India
Background: Among all the fractures of upper limbs, distal radial fractures are one of the most common in adults in India and also one of the commonest fractures encountered in orthopaedic clinical practice. Several meth...
Short term functional and neurological outcome of short segment pedicle screw fixation in unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures
Background: Burst fractures are the most common type of thoracolumbar spine fractures (21-58%) associated with kyphotic deformity and neurological deficits. The treatment goals include restoration of spinal stability, ky...
Bacterial flora and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns in open fracture wounds at a tertiary hospital of north India
The changes in pathogenic microbiological flora and the emergence of bacterial resistance have created major problems in the management of open fractures. A better understanding is required of the patterns or predilectio...
