Osteoporosis Prevalence in Patients Infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Its Correlation Between CD4+ T Cell Levels

Abstract

Objective: Osteopenia and osteoporosis are frequent comorbidities observed in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of reduced bone mineral density among male patients with HIV and correlation between disease activity and bone mineral density by using Cluster of Differentiation 4 (CD4)+ T cell levels. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 men with HIV, aged between 18 and 50 years admitted to our clinic from 2016 to 2019 were included in this study. Bone mineral density results measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and CD4+ T cell levels were retrospectively screened. Results: Decreased bone mineral density was observed in 35 (70%) patients, whereas 19 (38%) had osteoporosis and 16 (32%) had osteopenia. No significant correlation was found between the CD4+ T cell levels and bone mineral density values of patients (p>0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of decreased bone mineral density in male patients with HIV is a common problem, and its aetiology is not attributable by the disease itself or viral load. Further studies with more patients naive to antiretroviral treatments are necessary.
