OTHERS OF NEW HOMELAND: PERCEPTION OF OTHER IN POPULATION EXCHANGE NOVELS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 48

Abstract

The Populaion Exchange has emerged as a theme in various aspects of Turkish literature, especially in the post-1990 period. The writers of novels on the subject of Population Exchange are mainly descended from exchangee origin. This issue has been addressed in various disciplines, but literature has been scarcely evaluated in the field. In this study, it was tried to refer to the processes of stereotypes and othering which are caused by the problems experienced among the othochthonous people with the coming of the exchangees in the novels. The exchange, of course, involves different dynamics before, during and after the migration. Particularly in this study, it is mentioned how the exchangees are alienated by the othochthonous people in new homeland. From a general point of view, the novels have been subjected to various naming, accusations, degradation, and psychological violence through language, faith, clothing, tradition, and even geography. The reason for this alienation is that the autochthonous people have little knowledge about the exchanged people. At this point, it is seen that the exchanged people turned into a fear object. In addition, they are often isolated from society and live in closed form. In this study, the view of the exchanged people at the othochthonous people in the light of the various stereotypes in the novels is the most general point of view.
