OUTCOME OF COMMINUTED MIDDLE THIRD CLAVICULAR FRACTURE TREATED WITH OPEN REDUCTION AND INTERNAL FIXATION WITH PLATING

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 43

Abstract

BACKGROUND Clavicle is flat horizontal bone situated subcutaneously, which gives attachments to many muscles. The anatomical situation of clavicle makes it prone for injury especially with fall on point of shoulder and road traffic accidents. Clavicle is the only horizontal flat bone in human body. Its fractures have been traditionally treated conservatively with figure-of-eight bandage. Lately, there has been renewed interest in treating these fractures operatively. The aim of the study is to evaluate functional outcome following treatment of middle third clavicular fracture with ORIF and plating. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a prospective study from 2010-2016 involving 62 patients with middle third clavicular fracture, which were comminuted were treated with plate osteosynthesis. There were 60 males, 2 females, mean age being 34.8 years. 18 patients had associated injuries. Patients were followed at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months and 18 months. RESULTS The mean time for union was 13 weeks range being 12-14 weeks. At last follow up, all the fractures were united and patient returned to their preinjury activity. CONCLUSION Plating of displaced and comminuted middle third clavicular fracture is a standard practice compared to conservative treatment of these fractures due to faster union rate, early rehabilitation, improved shoulder function and less complication rate.
