Outcome of fractures of the distal end of humerus treated by the bicolumnar plating technique

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Orthopedics - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Management of fractures of the distal humerus, especially those which are intra-articularremain one of the most difficult of all fractures to manage. The locking plates provide a fixed plate screw construct with multiple screw options for easy application in distal complex fractures thereby providing angular stability. Aim: To evaluate the outcome of fractures of the distal end of humerus treated by the bicolumnar plating technique. Material and Methods: The present study included 20 cases of distal end of humerus fractures. All patients were treated surgically with open reduction and rigid internal fixation by bicolumnar plating. Patients were followed up for 6 months to evaluate the outcome by Mayo Elbow Performance Score. Results: There were 4 C1 type of fractures, out of which 3 had excellent and 1 had a good result. There were 14 cases of C2 type of fractures, out of which 9 had excellent, 3 had good and 2 had fair result. There were 2 cases of C3 type of fracture out of which 1 had good and 1 have poor result. There were no cases with non-union, implant failure, heterotopic ossification or olecranon osteotomy complications. Conclusion: Operative treatment with rigid anatomical internal fixation should be the line of treatment for intra articular fractures of distal humerus more so in young adults.
