Outcome of newborn babies in NICU BRIMS Bidar

Abstract

To study the morbidity and mortality pattern of newborn admitted in NICU BRIMS BIDAR and analyzed the measures which can be taken to reduce it. It was a prospective observational study of all newborns admitted in neonatal intensive care unit which is located in the Brims Bidar Karnataka State. The study was conducted over a period of 3 years from Jan 2014- Dec 2016. Total numbers of neonates admitted in NICU during this study period is 4860. The study comprised of all 4860 cases .Data of the newborn admitted to NICU were analyzed. Overall, the most prevalent indications for admissions were Birth Asphyxia, Pre-term with RDS, MAS, Sepsis, NNHB, and others. The Overall Mortality is 737(15.16%).This study identify birth asphyxia, Pre-term With RDS, MAS, NNHB, Sepsis and Others as Major Cause of Morbidity. Sepsis, Birth Asphyxia, Preterm. With RDS are major contributors to Neonatal Mortality. Mortality rate in NICU is high, these results highlight the fact that many causes of neonatal deaths are Preventable.
